What You Need
Milk frother
– 6 to 16 ounces of milk
– Saucepan or microwave to heat milk
– Thermometer (optional)
– Frothing pitcher (optional)
Step 1: Choose Your Milk Temperature
Unlike using a steam wand on an espresso machine, frothing with a separate device allows you to choose between cold or hot milk. This is perfect for making refreshing iced lattes on hot days.

– For cold drinks: Simply use cold milk straight from the fridge. For best results, chill your frothing pitcher as well. This keeps your milk cool and makes it easier to foam.
– For hot drinks: The ideal temperature for frothed milk is between 140 and 155°F. If you’re taking your drink to go, you can heat it to 160-165°F, but avoid scalding it (180°F), which can alter the flavor.

To heat your milk, you can use a microwave or a saucepan over low heat. Using a thermometer is recommended for beginners to ensure precise temperatures.

Step 2: Froth the Milk
The method varies depending on your frother type:

1. Electric Milk Frother:
– Add milk to the chamber, secure the lid, set the desired temperature, and start. Some models allow you to choose the milk texture.

Expert tip: For a latte, aim for a dense, creamy foam. For a cappuccino, create an airy froth.

2. Handheld Frothing Wand:
– Insert the whisk into the milk and turn it on, ensuring it’s at the right depth to create a steady whirlpool.

Expert tip: Froth in a pitcher for latte art or directly in your mug for convenience.

3. Manual Milk Frother (French Press):
– Add hot or cold milk, then pump the plunger rapidly for about 20-30 seconds.

Expert tip: A glass French press lets you see the frothing process, but you may need to reheat the milk. An insulated model keeps milk warmer but froths blindly.

Step 3: Clean Up
Cleaning up immediately is crucial as dried milk can be difficult to remove. Soak any used tools in water until you can wash them thoroughly with soap.
